Diabetes Care

Hattiesburg Clinic Diabetes Care is a Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) program accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). The program provides diabetes education and support to help patients with type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes gain knowledge and experience to manage their diabetes, reduce risk for complications and enhance their quality of life.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 30 million people in the United States are living with diabetes. For patients who have diabetes, the simplest of daily tasks can be overwhelming; but it doesn’t have to be this way.

Our team of health care professionals and support tools are available well after your first visit to our program. Our program is a collaborative process through which you can gain knowledge and skills needed to modify behavior and successfully self-manage the disease and its related conditions. The program is comprehensive and taught by diabetes educators who have extensive training. Our team of professionals works with your primary care provider to help you build a solid self-management foundation and reach goals. Our mission is to help you learn it and live it for the long run.

Education opportunities are presented in many forms, including one-on-one counseling and interactive classes provided by our certified diabetes educators.

Sessions focus on:

  • Understanding diabetes
  • Healthy eating
  • Being active
  • Taking medications
  • Monitoring
  • Problem solving
  • Healthy coping
  • Reducing risk

Integration with nutrition therapies is an important step in managing diabetes. As a component of Diabetes Care, medical nutrition therapy (MNT) is provided by a registered dietitian. This includes an individualized nutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis, intervention/monitoring and evaluation to help guide our patients to better nutrition health.

We are committed to remaining actively engaged with our patients. You can choose your level of support:

  • Tap into our resource library, apps and newsletters.
  • Attend community events and support groups.
  • Involve family and friends as support.

Hattiesburg Clinic’s Diabetes Support Group meets the first Tuesday of each month at Cloverleaf Medical Plaza in Hattiesburg. This is a free service available for individuals with diabetes, along with their family and friends, to learn how others in the community have improved their diabetes control and to hear from our diabetes health care team.

Patients need to be referred by a physician or mid-level provider prior to starting classes or attending a private consultation for diabetes education. Diabetes education for patients in their initial year of education:
