Breast MRI

Hattiesburg Clinic’s Breast Center of Excellence offers the latest breast imaging technology, including breast MRI.

Breast MRI Overview

A breast MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) generally is recommended following an abnormal mammogram and is a non-invasive, high-risk screening method used to find breast cancer. It can also be used to rule out breast cancer when other conditions in the breast are present. At Hattiesburg Clinic’s Breast Center of Excellence, our multidisciplinary team works closely with providers throughout the Hattiesburg Clinic network to order breast MRIs if needed, ensuring no patients fall through the cracks.

What is a breast MRI used for?

Of the breast imaging services, MRIs have proven to be a highly accurate and effective diagnostic tool to detect breast cancer and the extent of the disease.

There are many reasons your doctor may recommend a breast MRI, including:

  • Further evaluation of abnormalities identified during a mammogram
  • To detect breast cancer recurrence

If your health care provider has recommended a breast MRI, know that you are in good hands with the passionate breast care specialists at Hattiesburg Clinic.

Why would I need a breast MRI?

An MRI of the breast is recommended in high-risk women, including:

  • BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation carriers
  • Women with a relative (mother, sister, daughter) with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation
  • Those with a TC (Tyrer-Cuzick) score of 20% or greater
  • Those with dense breast tissue
  • When a definitive lesion cannot be identified by mammography or ultrasound
  • To identify the extent of the cancer that has been biopsied
  • Those with nipple discharge

If you do not know if you may be at high risk, ask your doctor to help you find out. Our team of breast care specialists is here to talk to you about your screening choices and educate patients on ways to lower your risk of getting breast cancer.

What the Tyrer-Cuzick Score Means

The Tyrer-Cuzick score, often called a TC score, is a risk assessment tool that measures an individual’s probability of developing breast cancer in their lifetime. The model makes predictions based on several factors, including age, history of breast conditions, family history of breast cancer, BMI, history of cancer and more. Scores over 20% are considered high-risk and a breast MRI is recommended.
