Microdermabrasion

Hattiesburg Clinic's team of plastic surgeons are skilled in performing microdermabrasion to improve the look of skin.

Microdermabrasion overview

Microdermabrasion works to revitalize wrinkled, coarse or sun-damaged skin. Not only does microdermabrasion remove dead skin cells, but it also promotes collagen production and the growth of new, fresh cells. This is achieved through a powerful mechanical device that sprays fine aluminum-dioxide microcrystals across the treatment area. Microdermabrasion can improve the appearance of imperfections on the face, chest and hands including: sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, coarse/textured skin and blemishes (including whiteheads and blackheads).

How is microdermabrasion performed?

Microdermabrasion is a fairly quick and painless procedure, so no anesthesia is necessary. It typically takes between 20 and 30 minutes.

Once the skin is cleaned, a trained medical professional will use the microdermabrasion machine, directing a stream of crystals over your skin’s surface to remove dead skin cells. After the treatment, rehydrating products will be applied to the skin.

Am I a good candidate for microdermabrasion?

While microdermabrasion is an ideal treatment for those looking to diminish sun damage, age spots, small scars, surface acne, large pores and fine lines, it is not a cure for heavily damaged skin. If you want to treat advanced signs of aging or extensive hyperpigmentation, microdermabrasion may not be for you. Also, if you’re suffering with active acne, warts or rosacea, undiagnosed lesions, unstable diabetes or other auto-immune system disorders, you may not be a good candidate for microdermabrasion.

During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss your medical history to make sure you are suitable for the procedure.

What can I expect after microdermabrasion?

This procedure is often called a “lunchtime peel” because it requires little to no recovery time. Most of our patients are able to return to work immediately. However, although you can resume daily activities right away, it is best to avoid direct sunlight for up to a week after your treatment. If you go outside, be sure to wear sunscreen.

There can be some side effects to microdermabrasion, including redness, which can last for a few hours. Your skin may also feel slightly sun or wind burnt.

What are the typical results from a microdermabrasion session?

The effects of microdermabrasion can usually be seen immediately. However, your skin care professional may recommend a series of four to six treatments, with healing time in between, to see optimal results.
