Microdermabrasion

Hattiesburg Clinic's team of dermatologists and plastic surgeons are skilled in performing microdermabrasion to improve the look of skin.

Microdermabrasion Overview

Microdermabrasion is a minimally-invasive procedure that removes the top layer of skin. The removal is achieved through a powerful mechanical device that sprays fine aluminum-dioxide microcrystals across the treatment area. The removal of dead skin cells results in a smoother texture, color and overall appearance.

What skin conditions does microdermabrasion treat?

Microdermabrasion is used to help with:

  • Dull skin
  • Dry and oily skin
  • Enlarged pores
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Scarring
  • Sun exposure
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Wrinkles and fine lines

How is microdermabrasion performed?

Microdermabrasion is a fairly quick and painless cosmetic procedure, so anesthesia or numbing cream is not necessary.

Before the microdermabrasion procedure begins, a trained medical professional will use a microdermabrasion machine to treat the designated area. The machine will direct a stream of crystals over your skin’s surface to remove dead skin cells. Rehydrating products will be applied post-procedure to restore moisture and prevent any dryness.

How long does a microdermabrasion procedure take?

The length of the procedure varies depending on the treatment area but typically takes between 20 and 30 minutes.

Am I a good candidate for microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is an ideal treatment for patients who are looking to treat surface-level, minor skin issues. Other cosmetic treatments are recommended for heavily-damaged skin or for individuals looking to treat advanced and extensive conditions.

Microdermabrasion is suitable for most skin types, but you may not be a candidate if you have:

  • Active acne
  • Active skin infections
  • Auto-immune disorders
  • Rosacea
  • Undiagnosed lesions
  • Unstable diabetes
  • Used Accutane in the past six months
  • Warts

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are also advised to avoid microdermabrasion treatments.

During your consultation, your practitioner will discuss your medical history to make sure you are suitable for the procedure.

What are typical microdermabrasion results and how long does it last?

The effects of microdermabrasion are typically seen immediately. However, your skin care professional may recommend a series of four to six treatments, with healing time between sessions, to achieve optimal results.

What can I expect after a microdermabrasion procedure?

Microdermabrasion is often called a “lunchtime peel” because the procedure requires little to no recovery time. Most of our patients can immediately return to work. Although you can resume daily activities right away, we recommend avoiding direct sunlight for a week after your treatment. If you go outside, use a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 35.

You may experience redness or a sensation similar to sunburn/windburn for a few hours after treatment. These reactions are normal and typically disappear within a few hours.

Differences Between Microneedling and Microdermabrasion

Both microneedling and microdermabrasion are effective cosmetic treatments for improving skin texture. Each procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes to perform and is suitable for most skin types. For optimal results, our skin specialists recommend a series of treatments for both procedures.

However, microdermabrasion is recommended for surface-level skin issues, while microneedling is recommended for deeper and advanced issues. Microdermabrasion typically produces faster results than microneedling, because deeper skin issues take longer to address. Microneedling requires more post-treatment maintenance than microdermabrasion but is still fairly minimal.
