Endometriosis

Hattiesburg Clinic offers comprehensive OBGYN services for patients across South Mississippi suffering from endometriosis.

Endometriosis Overview

Endometriosis is a chronic disease in which cells that line the uterus spread to other areas outside of the uterus, growing excess tissue that can spread across the pelvic area, as well as nearby organs such as the ovaries, bowels, and bladder. For many women, endometriosis can cause severe abdominal pain. However, as much as 25% of women diagnosed with endometriosis are asymptomatic for the disease, making it difficult to diagnose.

Causes of Endometriosis

The cause of endometriosis is unknown. It can start as early as a teen’s first menstrual period and last into menopause. It is most common in women between the ages of 30 to 40 years old. Endometriosis can be inherited and women with a mother, sister, or daughter with endometriosis are seven times more likely to develop the condition themselves.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

There are many symptoms of endometriosis, and they can vary in terms of severity from female to female, while some symptoms may not present themselves at all. If you exhibit the following symptoms, call our office to schedule an appointment with one of our experienced gynecologists.

  • Vaginal pain or pain in the pelvis, rectum, abdomen, or lower back
  • Irregular menstrual cycles with excessive bleeding
  • Infertility
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Pain when urinating, defecating, or engaging in sexual intercourse
  • Bloody stool
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea

Conditions Often Mistaken for Endometriosis

Often endometriosis is mistaken for other conditions impacting the pelvic region including:

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) — An infection of the upper genital tract that causes inflammation, pain in the lower abdomen, as well as vaginal bleeding.
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) — A condition characterized by chronic inflammation of the digestive tract resulting in stomach pain and irregular bowel movements.
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) — A chronic disorder impacting the gastrointestinal tract resulting in cramping, diarrhea, constipation, or both.
