AMA Shadow My Specialty with Dr. Bo Hrom

John S. “Bo” Hrom, MD, with Hattiesburg Clinic Hematology/Oncology, was recently featured in the American Medical Association’s Shadow My Specialty series, which provides medical students with firsthand perspectives from physicians about their careers. The series is designed to help students explore different specialties and understand what daily practice looks like in the field.

Dr. Hrom, who has been in practice for 15 years, discussed both the challenges and rewards of caring for patients with cancer. He noted that one of the most difficult parts of his role is guiding patients and families through end-of-life decisions and addressing common misconceptions about cancer treatment. At the same time, he emphasized how meaningful it is to provide advanced therapies that can improve quality of life and extend survival.

“The most rewarding part of my job is being able to improve the lives of patients who have advanced malignancies,” he said. “Providing state-of-the-art treatment that can improve patients’ quality of life, as well as their life expectancy, is extremely rewarding.”

In addition to his clinical work, Hrom serves as oncology clinical trial director at Hattiesburg Clinic. Through this role, he helps bring leading-edge cancer therapies to patients in a community setting, giving them access to treatments that might not otherwise be available.

His participation in the Shadow My Specialty series offers future physicians valuable insight into the realities of practicing hematology and oncology while underscoring the importance of compassion, research and innovation in patient care.
