What to Expect During a Mammogram
In a recent interview with WDAM, Brittany Dozier, manager of Hattiesburg Clinic The Breast Center, shed some light on what to expect when getting a mammogram. For many women, especially those getting their first mammogram, the idea of the exam can bring anxiety. The team at The Breast Center work to dispel fears and guide patients through the process step-by-step.
Dozier explained that one of the biggest worries women bring with them is pain, but today’s mammograms are much more comfortable than they were in the past. “While compression is still necessary, it’s significantly less than it was 20 years ago,” shared Dozier.
The Breast Center team prioritizes a patient-centered approach, moving at each patient’s pace and checking in throughout the exam to ensure comfort. “If they feel like, ‘Hey, I need to slow down,’ we slow down. If they say, ‘Let’s just get it over with,’ which is how most of them are, we do that,” Dozier said. Staff also work to address emotional concerns, with lead mammography tech, Denise White, noting that connecting with patients on a human level helps them relax.
White emphasized the importance of yearly screenings, explaining, “We want to find breast cancer long before you or your doctor feels a lump in your breast,” White said. “We want to find the ones that are very tiny so that you have the best possible outcome, and you can beat it.” Dozier also addressed the misconception that only women with a family history of breast cancer need regular screenings, pointing out that 80 to 85 percent of women diagnosed have no family history at all. Health experts recommend annual screenings beginning at age 40, regardless of family history or other risk factors.
Throughout the interview Dozier and White, represented Hattiesburg Clinic’s values to show a commitment to each patient and offer compassion with patient-centered health care. Read the full article here: https://www.wdam.com/2025/08/07/what-expect-during-mammogram-hattiesburg-clinic-breast-center/.
