Rambod A. Rouhbakhsh, MD, Discusses Academic Family Medicine and Clinical Research with American Medical Association

Rambod A. Rouhbakhsh, MD, a physician with Hattiesburg Clinic Clinical Research, recently discussed his specialty with the American Medical Association (AMA).

With 20 years of experience, Dr. Rouhbakhsh emphasizes the difference in being a clinical doctor versus working primarily on the academic side.

“My work is cognitively more challenging in academics, but it is less intense,” he says. “Teaching is a remarkable joy, and I would encourage anyone who enjoys that to consider academic family medicine.”

A typical week for Dr. Rouhbakhsh involves several elements of work, depending on the day. Mondays are teaching days, Tuesdays are recruitment and administrative days, Wednesdays are program and institutional development days and Thursdays and Fridays are clinical research days. As someone in a leadership position, he says he now rarely finds quiet time to create a work product, so some of his most meaningful work is done after hours.

Dr. Rouhbakhsh expands on his appreciation for the flexibility and opportunity that comes along with family medicine.

“In family medicine, you can become whatever you want to become. It gives you sufficient background to discover your passions, which sometimes may be being a true generalist and having your hand in everything all the time. In that way, this specialty is extremely rewarding because it gives you the most tools to take care of the largest group of people in the most practical way.”
