    PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men. While prostate cancer can be a serious disease, many cases progress slowly and can be successfully treated when detected early.

One of the challenges of prostate cancer is that it often develops without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Screening plays an important role in early detection. Your physician or provider can help determine when screening should begin based on your age, personal health history and risk factors.

Who is at risk for prostate cancer?

The risk of prostate cancer increases with age, particularly after 50 years of age. Men with a family history of prostate cancer or certain inherited genetic mutations may have a higher risk.

How do you test for prostate cancer?

A prostate cancer screening typically begins with a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test. This test measures the level of PSA, a protein produced by the prostate gland, in the bloodstream. Elevated PSA levels may indicate the need for additional evaluation, although higher levels do not always mean cancer is present.

What should I do if I develop symptoms?

If you experience urinary changes, pelvic discomfort, blood in the urine or semen or other concerning symptoms, schedule an appointment with your primary care physician for evaluation.
