Interventional Pain

Interventional Pain Overview

The interventional pain team at Hattiesburg Clinic focuses on relieving pain at its source—using advanced, minimally invasive procedures tailored to the patient’s unique condition and goals. Our board-certified interventional pain specialists are experts in diagnosing and treating a wide range of pain conditions, including back and neck pain, nerve-related pain, joint pain and complex spine disorders. We use advanced techniques to precisely target the nerves, tissues or joints causing discomfort. This approach often results in faster relief, improved mobility and a reduced need for long-term medications.

What Is Interventional Pain Management?

Interventional pain management begins with a thorough evaluation to understand the root cause of the pain. This may include imaging studies, a review of the patient’s medical history and a physical examination. Once we identify the source of the pain, we develop a customized treatment plan tailored to the patient’s specific condition, lifestyle and goals. Many of the procedures we offer can be performed in an outpatient setting, using local anesthesia or mild sedation, which means minimal downtime and a quicker return to a normal routine. We prioritize treatments that are both effective and conservative—focusing on long-term relief with the least possible disruption to daily life. Some patients may require a series of procedures, while others find significant relief after just one treatment. Throughout the delivery of care, we monitor progress and adjust the plan as needed to ensure an optimal outcome. Our ultimate goal is to help our patients regain control, improve function and enhance their quality of life.

Some treatments we offer include:

Cancer Nerve Blocks

Cancer nerve blocks are a type of pain management treatment we offer to patients whose cancer-related pain has not been adequately controlled through other medications or therapies. This approach can be helpful for individuals experiencing severe pain caused by tumors pressing on nerves or from nerve damage related to cancer or its treatment. Depending on the patient’s, medication may include a local anesthetic, a steroid or both, and it is injected near the affected nerve or group of nerves.

Our specialists can determine if this is a suitable option for your pain management plan and provide help in navigating the next steps in your care.

Dorsel Root Ganglion Stimulation

Dorsel Root Ganglion (DRG) stimulation is a type of spinal cord stimulation treatment that we offer patients with chronic pain that has proven to be difficult to treat through other stimulation and therapy options.

DRGs (dorsal root ganglion) are sensory nerves that are located in the spine. These nerves are responsible for sending pain signals to the brain. This treatment option works by targeting different DRGs in the spine to help treat a specific area of the body where a patient regularly experiences pain.

During this process, a small device is implanted in your spine that works by delivering electrical pulses to the dorsal root ganglia, with the goal of it blocking the pain. Our experts can help guide you on whether or not this is a good treatment option for your condition.
