Sinus Surgery

Hattiesburg Clinic's ear, nose and throat doctors offer advanced endoscopic sinus surgeries and other procedures to effectively treat chronic sinus symptoms.

Sinus Surgery Overview

At Hattiesburg Clinic, we are dedicated to helping our patients find long-lasting solutions to their sinus problems. Some patients find that medication alone does not provide lasting relief from chronic sinusitis symptoms. If balloon sinuplasty is not recommended, our ear, nose and throat physicians may suggest endoscopic sinus surgery. This procedure aims to widen the sinus drainage pathway, promoting better drainage and healing of sinus infections.

What to Expect During Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Endoscopic sinus surgery is a great solution for those with chronic sinusitis who are not candidates for balloon sinuplasty.

  • During endoscopic nasal surgery, one of our physicians will use an endoscope, inserted through your nostrils, to view the passageways and sinus openings.
  • Then, the physician will remove obstructive or abnormal tissue. By removing the tissue, the openings will expand and allow for proper drainage. This helps clear the sinuses and promote healing.
  • While patient results may vary, many people return to normal activities within one to two weeks following their sinus infection surgery.

If you have questions regarding if you are a better candidate for balloon sinuplasty or endoscopic sinus surgery, contact our team to schedule a consultation.

Balloon Sinuplasty vs. Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure and recovery time is shorter. A balloon is used to widen the sinus cavity to help drain fluid. With endoscopic sinus surgery, obstructive tissues like nasal polyps and diseased mucosa are surgically removed. This type of sinus surgery is often recommended when the patient’s sinusitis is severe or has not responded well to other treatments.

The choice between balloon sinuplasty and endoscopic sinus surgery depends on the severity of the condition, the anatomy of the sinuses and the patient’s medical history and preferences. A sinus CT scan may be helpful in viewing the anatomy of the sinuses and if any nasal polyps are present. Schedule a consultation with one of our Hattiesburg ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialists to determine which procedure is most appropriate for you.
