Balloon Sinus Treatment

Hattiesburg Clinic’s ear, nose and throat doctors provide long-lasting sinus relief through balloon sinuplasty surgery.

Balloon Sinus Treatment Overview

Chronic sinusitis can be debilitating because symptoms affect how you breathe, talk and feel in your daily life. Medications and nasal sprays may temporarily alleviate chronic sinus symptoms, but sinuplasty surgery provides patients with a long-lasting and immediate solution for improved breathing and sinus pain relief.

Reasons for Balloon Sinuplasty

Balloon sinuplasty surgery is recommended when patients are exhibiting a range of chronic sinus symptoms including:

  • Headaches
  • Stuffy nose
  • Runny nose
  • Post-nasal drip (throat drainage)
  • Sore throat
  • Sneezing
  • Congestion
  • Facial pressure
  • Facial swelling
  • Cough
  • Dizziness
  • Ear full of fluid
  • Ear pain
  • Loss of sense of smell and/or taste

Many patients simultaneously experience several of these symptoms. Patients who have suffered chronic sinus symptoms for over three months are often ideal candidates for balloon sinuplasty. Our ear, nose and throat specialists will determine if treatment is your best next step based on your conditions, age and medical history.

How does the balloon sinuplasty procedure work?

The goal of sinuplasty surgery is to clear congestion by opening any blocked sinus passages and draining fluid. Patients are awake for the minimally-invasive procedure.

  • Local anesthesia will be injected into the inside of your nose.
  • Your ENT doctor will insert a catheter into your nose.
  • The catheter will guide the balloon through your nostril and into your sinus cavity.
  • The balloon will slowly be inflated to enlarge the sinus cavity and drain fluid.
  • The process will be repeated as needed. When finished, your doctor will deflate and remove the balloon and catheter.

Benefits of Balloon Sinuplasty Surgery

There are many benefits of the balloon procedure including:

  • Local anesthesia: Balloon sinuplasty only requires a local anesthetic, making the procedure a great option for patients who are ineligible for general anesthesia.
  • Comfortable surroundings: The outpatient procedure is performed in the comfort of the office.
  • Minimal risk: Clinical research shows that side effects are rare, and complications are few.
  • Less invasive: Tissue is widened rather than cut through or removed, resulting in less scarring and bleeding than other procedures.
  • Minimal pain: Balloon surgery is not painful. Patients typically only experience a sense of pressure in their nose.
  • Quick treatment: The procedure typically lasts no longer than 90 minutes.
  • Immediate relief: Many patients experience instant relief.
  • Long-lasting relief: Clinical research shows that patients typically do not report relapses for a minimum of two years post-procedure.
  • Quick recovery: Sinuplasty requires less recovery time than endoscopic sinus surgery. Patients often return to their normal activities within 48 hours of the procedure.
