Caregivers and Professionals Learn More About ADHD at Annual Conference
Last week, caregivers and professionals from across the Pine Belt gathered to learn more about ADHD at the 22nd annual ADHD and Related Concerns Conference. Studies show that 7 million children and 8.7 million adults in the United States have been diagnosed with ADHD. Carrie E. Morgan, PhD, CCSP, with Hattiesburg Clinic – Psychology & Counseling discussed the disorder.
“ADHD is a neuro-developmental childhood disorder, characterized by inattention, hyperactivity and/or impulsivity,” Morgan said.
There are three categories of ADHD, the most common being attention deficit disorder. “There’s a predominantly hyperactive, compulsive type, which is more about high activity, restlessness and impulsivity,” said Morgan. “Then, there’s the all-of-the-above combined type.”
Regardless of which of the three categories a person with ADHD falls into, resources are available to help. “There are lots of avenues out there, usually starting with your primary care provider is a great first step,” Morgan said.
