Drs. Sumrall and Burkett Selected for MAFP Leadership
Congratulations to Steven W. Burkett, DO, with Hattiesburg Clinic Richton Family Medicine, and Chrystal A. Sumrall, MD, FAAFP, with Hattiesburg Clinic Laurel Family Medicine, on being selected for leadership positions within the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP).
The Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians is a professional association representing family medicine physicians, residents and medical students across the state. The organization focuses on promoting excellence in health care, supporting continuing education and serving as a voice for family medicine in Mississippi.
Dr. Burkett has been selected to serve as District 2 Director, and Dr. Sumrall has been selected to serve as secretary for the 2025-26 term. The MAFP is dedicated to advancing the specialty of family medicine with a mission to improve the health of all people of Mississippi.
As District 2 Director, Burkett will represent physicians and communities in his region, bringing their perspectives to the state organization. “It is a privilege to represent District 2 and advocate for the needs of our patients and physicians,” Burkett said. “I am excited to help advance initiatives that support the health of our communities.”
Sumrall looks forward to contributing to this mission and shared, “Family medicine physicians are at the heart of community health, and I am honored to serve in this capacity. I look forward to working with my colleagues to strengthen family medicine across Mississippi.”
Their election to these leadership roles reflects Burkett and Sumrall’s and dedication to advancing family medicine and commitment to supporting physicians who serve our patients and uphold the values of compassionate, patient-centered care.
