The ‘Not So Obvious’ Symptoms of ADHD

By Lauren M. English, PA-C

When we consider a person with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), usually we will assume the typical inattentive or hyperactive behaviors or maybe even a combination of both. However, sometimes ADHD can present in several ways that may be surprising.

Typical Presentation of ADHD Symptoms

Hyperactivity (talks a lot, fidgets, always on the go, etc.)

Impulsivity (blurts out, interrupts, lies, angry outbursts, difficulty waiting, etc.)

Inattention (forgetful, loses things, disorganized, makes careless mistakes, etc.)

Atypical Presentation of ADHD Symptoms

Three years behind maturity (16-year-old acts like a 13-year-old)

Coexisting conditions (anxiety, depression, bipolar, substance abuse, Tourette’s disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, conduct disorder)

Impaired sense of time (loses track of time, often late, hates waiting, avoids doing homework, etc.)

Sleep disturbances (has trouble with sleep initiation, sleep deprived, can’t wake up easily, etc.)

Weak executive function (poor recall of information, internalizing language, controlling emotions, problem-solving, etc.)

Learning problems (trouble memorizing, forgets assignments, poor written expression, poor listening and reading comprehension, poor handwriting, impulsive learning style, etc.)

Knowing the difference between the above symptoms and one’s baseline ability can be challenging to say the least. Here at Connections and Psychology & Counseling, we offer a multitude of services that can help in determining the meaning of the symptoms presented.

After the initial appointment at our clinic, patients work with a team of clinical psychologists, speech/language pathologists and medical professionals to determine factors such as intelligence, language abilities and learning achievement.
