BOTOX® for Incontinence

BOTOX® for Incontinence Due to Overactive Bladder

Overactive bladder (OAB) is when the bladder contracts uncontrollably, leading to leakage, the strong sudden urge to go and going too often. This condition occurs when nerves send signals to your bladder at the wrong time, which causes the bladder muscles to squeeze without warning. This results in spasms that manifest in those uncomfortable symptoms

Am I Controlling My Symptoms or Are They Controlling Me?

Coping with your symptoms does not mean you are in control of them? You may have a personal system in place to deal with your symptoms as they arise. Many people do. But if your symptoms are disrupting your daily life or hindering you in any way, you are not in control.

You may not be in control of your symptoms if you are:

  • Using multiple leakage pads per day
  • Planning all your travel around restrooms
  • Not doing things you like for fear of leakage
  • Worrying about it every day

One of our treatment options for urinary incontinence is BOTOX.

How Can BOTOX Help Me?

BOTOX (onabotulinumtoxinA) works on the bladder muscle by blocking the nerve signals that trigger your overactive bladder. BOTOX is a different treatment option when another type of medication (anticholinergic) does not work well enough or cannot be taken.

Treatment guidelines provided by the American Urological Association list BOTOX as an appropriate therapy to consider when self-management is not effective and oral medications are not working or have intolerable side effects.

By reducing bladder contractions, BOTOX can help:

  • Reduce weekly urinary leakage episode
  • Increase bladder capacity (how much urine your bladder can store)
  • Decrease the pressure in your bladder (high bladder pressure can cause urine leakage)

More than 169,000 people with overactive bladder have been treated with BOTOX since it was approved by the FDA in 2013. One study involving about 100,000 patients, 71 percent of patients reported that they stopped taking oral medications for OAB within six months. (Patient results may vary.)

Talk with your doctor if you think you could benefit from BOTOX.

You deserve a better quality of life.
