Breast Reconstruction Overview

Hattiesburg Clinic Plastic Surgery offers breast reconstruction procedures to South Mississippi patients who want to restore the shape of one or two breasts after a mastectomy, lumpectomy, or congenital deformities. These procedures are deeply personal and require a trusted, reputable plastic surgeon. With nearly 50 years of combined experience, our experts are here to answer questions, discuss options, and develop a plan for you.

Breast reconstruction surgery can be very rewarding, giving women an improved body image and increased self-esteem following a mastectomy or lumpectomy. We understand the scope and emotional journey patients undergo when they “need” reconstructive surgery. We have a tremendous amount of experience with helping patients through the recovery process and are committed to taking care of the whole patient.

How is breast reconstruction performed?

Various surgical techniques are available when you undergo breast reconstruction. One option available to patients is to use a breast implant – either saline-filled or silicone-filled – to recreate the breast. Other women choose to have a tissue flap procedure, in which tissue from your stomach, back or buttocks is used to reconstruct the breast.

Am I a good candidate for breast reconstruction?

While breast reconstruction is possible immediately after the removal of the breast, it is essential to make sure that any cancer has been completely eliminated before undergoing this surgery. Other factors to consider include the following:

  • Overall health
  • The stage of breast cancer
  • The size of natural breast
  • The amount of tissue available for a flap procedure (if the route chosen)
  • Desired appearance match of the other breast
  • Desire for bilateral reconstructive surgery
  • Insurance coverage for unaffected breast and related costs
  • The type of cancer treatment, as well as choice of reconstructive procedure
  • The size of the implant or reconstructed breast

During your initial consultation, one of our board-certified plastic surgeons will discuss all details with you to make sure your concerns and questions are addressed.

What can I expect after breast reconstruction surgery?

Our breast reconstruction patients can expect to spend between one and six days in the hospital following this procedure. Once released, a patient may need to keep a surgical drain to remove excess fluids from the surgery site.

Most patients experience some soreness for up to two weeks, which can be managed with pain medication prescribed by our surgeons. Full recovery typically takes between six to eight weeks. It is important for all patients to remember that multiple surgeries may be needed for the breast to be fully restored. Patience and commitment are essential.
