Tummy Tuck

Our experienced plastic surgeons offer patients the latest abdominoplasty techniques.

Tummy Tuck Overview

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the shape and appearance of the abdomen. During tummy tuck surgery, excess fat and skin is removed, and weakened muscles are restored creating a smoother and firmer abdomen.

Common causes of a loose or sagging abdomen can include:

  • Aging
  • Pregnancy
  • Changes in weight
  • Heredity

If exercise and weight control is not working, or perhaps you are bothered by the appearance of your abdomen, tummy tuck surgery might be right for you. Our highly-trained, board-certified plastic surgeons are active members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and have years of experience providing the total body results you are looking for.

How is a tummy tuck performed?

A tummy tuck is performed by our board-certified plastic surgeons as an outpatient procedure. Patients are placed under general anesthesia, and incisions are typically made in the bikini line and sometimes around the navel. After the incision, the skin is separated from the abdomen and lifted up. Excess skin and fat are removed, and the abdominal muscles are tightened before the incision is closed. Both incisions are well-hidden and tend to fade nicely with time.

What can I expect after a tummy tuck?

Following abdominoplasty, you may experience some swelling, bruising and discomfort. To alleviate pain, our plastic surgeons will put in a post-operative pain pump, which helps manage the discomfort for the first few days. Drains are also placed and are generally removed within a week after surgery.

You’ll be given a compression garment, which supports the abdomen and aids in healing. This should be worn for at least a month. Most stitches will be removed in five to seven days while deeper stitches are taken out two to three weeks following the procedure. Most of our tummy tuck patients can go back to work after two weeks. However, all patients should avoid strenuous activity for up to six weeks.

What are the typical results of tummy tuck surgery?

Patients are typically pleased with their new shape, being both slimmer and trimmer.

Some patients are concerned about the scarring involved with a tummy tuck. While there is some scarring, our surgeons make every effort to hide them as much as possible. Additionally, they will fade over time. Real-life examples can be found in our body contouring before and after pictures.

Mini Tummy Tuck vs. Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck involves a much smaller incision along the lower abdomen. However, a mini tummy tuck does not often allow our surgeons to rid the excess skin or repair the muscles across the entire abdomen.

You might be a good candidate for a mini tummy tuck if your excess skin is located below the navel only and there is little to no muscle separation. Our plastic surgery team can help you determine which direction is best for your unique situation.
