Liposuction

The board certified plastic surgeons at Hattiesburg Clinic are skilled in liposuction to remove excess fat.

Liposuction Overview

For patients looking for liposuction services, Hattiesburg Clinic can help. Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, is a surgical procedure that uses a suction technique to remove fat in specific areas of the body. Often used on the abdomen, arms, buttocks, hips, neck or thighs, this procedure can improve the contour and shape of an area.

If you are considering liposuction as a fat loss option, you likely have a lot of questions about the process, the recovery and what to expect. Our board-certified experts will have a one-on-one consultation with you to address each of these.

Benefits of Liposuction

Patients can reap many benefits from a liposuction procedure. Some include:

  • Enhanced appearance and contour
  • Safe, targeted fat reduction
  • Permanent results
  • Speedy recovery with minimal scarring
  • Improved self-esteem and self-confidence

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

Used by both men and women, liposuction is a common cosmetic procedure. The best candidates are:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Physically and emotionally healthy
  • No more than 20 pounds overweight but have persistent, localized fat deposits that will not disappear with diet and exercise. This can be due to several factors, including genetics, body chemistry and age.
  • Have realistic outcome expectations

It is important to understand that liposuction is not designed for extreme weight loss, so having realistic expectations for your results is crucial in determining whether you are a good candidate for the procedure.

How is liposuction performed?

Liposuction patients are placed under local or general anesthesia. The area of concern will be marked carefully before making small punctures in the skin. At that point, fluids will be injected to limit blood loss and reduce discomfort. After this, a thin, hollow tube called a cannula is inserted. This is used to break up and suction out fat from the body.

What are the typical results of liposuction?

Once the pockets of fat are removed, most liposuction patients are pleased with their new body contour. The results of liposuction can be seen in our liposuction patients’ before and after pictures.

What can I expect after liposuction surgery?

After undergoing liposuction, patients will be provided with elastic garments to wear for up to one week. You can expect drainage from small incision sites, which are left open temporarily to allow fluid and residual fatty deposits to empty. Bruising and swelling may also be apparent but should cease within three weeks.

While each patient is different, most can return to work within a few days following their liposuction procedure. Most patients are encouraged to move around after surgery to avoid a blood clot. However, patients should refrain from any strenuous activities for at least three weeks.
