Chin Implant Overview

There are two main types of chin surgery: chin augmentation and chin reduction. Chin augmentation, or chin implant, is performed on those looking to improve their recessed chin, when the chin slopes back toward the neck.

How is a chin implant performed?

There are two main types of chin surgery: chin augmentation and chin reduction.

Chin augmentation, or chin implant, is performed on those looking to improve their recessed chin, when the chin slopes back toward the neck. A small incision is made either inside the mouth or under the skin of the chin. Implants are placed on the bone, then the incisions are closed.

Chin reduction surgery, or chin saving surgery, is performed on those with protruding chins. Similar incisions are made, excess bone is removed and the chin is contoured. Afterwards, the incisions are closed.

Am I a good candidate for a chin implants?

You may be a good candidate for chin surgery if:

  • You are physically healthy and at a stable weight
  • You have realistic expectations
  • You are a nonsmoker
  • You are bothered by the appearance of your chin
  • You have a chin that is too short or lacks projection

Be sure to talk to a board-certified plastic surgeon about any questions or hesitancies you may have.

What can I expect after chin implants?

After the procedure, gauze dressings or bandages may be applied to your incisions. An elastic bandage or compression garment may reduce swelling and support the chin as it heals. If you have a chin implant placed through an incision inside your mouth, you may be placed on a liquid diet and given special mouth rinses. Your plastic surgeon will give you specific care instructions that may include:

  • How to care for your surgical site(s) following surgery
  • Medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the risk of infection
  • Specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health
  • When to follow up with your plastic surgeon

What are typical results from chin implants?

Procedure results will be more visible once swelling reduces. Following your physician’s instructions is key to success. It is important that the surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, abrasion or motion during the time of healing. Some patients will opt to touch up their results using injectable fillers instead of returning to the operating room.
