Breast Reduction

The plastic surgery team at Hattiesburg Clinic has years of expertise in breast reduction procedures.

Breast Reduction Overview

Also known as mammaplasty, this procedure removes excess breast fat, tissue and skin to reduce breast size to be more in proportion with your body.

How is a breast reduction performed?

A reduction mammoplasty is an outpatient procedure, but is a very extensive procedure with several incisions. The operation involves removing excess tissue and moving the tissue and the nipple to restore the shape of the breast. In doing so, the incisions and the nipple must be carefully monitored to ensure healing. Drains are usually placed to remove excess fluid.

This procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The surgical procedure takes around two hours, depending on the size of the breasts.

Am I a good candidate for a breast reduction?

If the size of your breasts causes you to experience any of the following problems, you may be a good candidate for a breast reduction:

  • Back, neck or shoulder pain.
  • Painful bra strap marks and/or rashes as a result of large breasts.
  • Heavy, sagging breasts.
  • Irritation and/or rash beneath your breasts.
  • Difficulty exercising or participating in physical activity because of the weight and size of the breasts.
  • One breast is noticeably larger than the other breast.

Risks that accompany breast reduction procedures are related to a patient’s overall health and age.

What can I expect after a breast reduction?

Patients who elect to have a breast reduction report some swelling, as well as numbness or sensitivity of the breasts. Our board-certified surgeons will prescribe a post-operative pain pump to give patients additional relief.

Once released from our medical facility, patients will be sent home with an elastic bandage to wear to control swelling. This will be removed after two to three days. Patients will also be required to wear a surgical bra for about a month after the procedure. Most patients return to work within two weeks, but should refrain from any heavy lifting for up to four weeks to avoid straining any muscles of the breasts.

Following breast reduction surgery, patients are finally relieved of constant neck and back pain. Many also report that they are relieved to have clothing fit properly. Breast reduction surgery gives our patients a renewed sense of self-confidence. This procedure produces minimal scarring that will fade over time.
