Breastfeeding & Lactation Consulting

Trust Hattiesburg Clinic for expert lactation consulting services to make your breastfeeding journey a success.

Breastfeeding & Lactation Consulting

Adjusting to life with a newborn can be difficult, especially as you are recovering from delivery yourself. If you have made the decision to breastfeed and need assistance, choose Hattiesburg Clinic for a certified lactation consultant. Our breastfeeding consultants can offer advice wherever you are in your postpartum journey – home with a newborn, returning to work or close to finishing your breastfeeding goals.

Benefits of Breastfeeding

Although learning to breastfeed takes time at first, there are many benefits, both for mother and baby in the short and long-term. The skin-to-skin contact helps baby feel secure while increasing oxytocin levels in the mother. This promotes mother and baby bonding. Breast milk is also easier for babies to digest and is filled with a variety of nutrients and antibodies that are not found in formula. For mothers who choose to breastfeed, they save hundreds of dollars a month, compared to buying formula.

What can a lactation consultant help with?

Our lactation specialists can help with many different aspects of your breastfeeding journey, including:

  • Making sure baby’s latch is correct to ensure he or she is getting enough milk and it is not painful for you. (If your baby is struggling to latch, it may be because they have a tongue or lip tie.)
  • Teaching different nursing positions to help you understand your options and find what is most comfortable for you and your baby.
  • Providing recommendations for your diet to reduce baby’s spit up and acid reflux if needed. A lactation consultant can also offer advice if a cow’s milk allergy is suspected in the baby.
  • Answering any questions you have about breastfeeding, like how long to let baby nurse, how to keep baby awake when nursing, when to switch sides, when to burp the baby and more.
  • Answering any questions you have about pumping breast milk, such as how often to pump, how to store breast milk, how long it lasts at room temperature, in the refrigerator, and in the freezer, how to store and clean your pump supplies and more.
  • Helping you develop a back-to-work pumping plan, which can include creating a pumping schedule, recommendations on how to store your breast milk at work and in the car, showing you how to use your pump and more.
  • Helping you increase your milk supply if you notice a decrease, which is common once you start back to work or once your baby starts trying solid foods.
  • Offering advice if baby has gone on a nursing strike and you would prefer to still nurse rather than pump exclusively.
