The Importance of a Proper Warm-Up

Warming up is a crucial part of any workout or physical activity because it helps prepare the body for exercise by increasing heart rate, breathing rate and body temperature. It helps to reduce the risk of injury and improve performance. Warming up also helps to increase flexibility, as well as coordination, balance and reaction time. It is also a proactive way to reduce muscle stiffness and fatigue.

“Most of the time what we tell our athletes or tell anyone who’s fixing to go into physical activity is to warm-up, and this is just to prepare our bodies,” Courtney Dossett, LAT, ATC, with Hattiesburg Clinic Sports Medicine said. “We’re getting our muscles loosened up… because you don’t want to go out there completely cold, because if you do that, you prone yourself to have injuries.”

A typical warm-up should last five to 10 minutes and work all major muscle groups: arms (biceps, triceps and forearms), shoulders (front, side and rear deltoids), chest (pectoralis major and pectoralis minor), back (lats, traps, rhomboids and spinal erectors), core (abs, obliques, transverse abdominis and lower back), upper legs and glutes (quads, hamstrings, glutes and adductors) and lower legs (calves and tibialis anterior). When warming up, it is best to start slowly and build intensity over time, allowing the body time to gradually adjust to the physical demands of the activity.

Warming up can also raise energy levels because it increases the production of endorphins, which are hormones that help reduce stress and boost energy, making exercise more enjoyable improving motivation and focus.

What Injuries Can Result From Skipping a Warm-Up?

Skipping a warm-up before physical activity can result in injuries such as muscle strains and sprains and joint injuries, as well as injuries that develop slowly, over time such as tendinitis.

Muscle strains occur when a muscle is overextended and stretches too far, leading to a tear. Typically, muscle strains are mild, but in severe cases, the muscle can tear all the way through. Sprains occur when ligaments, which are tough bands of tissue that connect bones and stabilize joints, stretch too far and tear. Like muscle strains, sprains can range from mild to severe. Tendinitis is the inflammation or irritation of the tissue that connects bones and muscles called tendons. It is caused by a repeated strain injury caused by overuse.

What are the Benefits of a Warm-Up?

  • Increased range of motion and flexibility: Warming up before exercise increases the range of motion and flexibility of muscles, ligaments and tendons, allowing your body to perform movements more easily. Dynamic stretches are particularly beneficial for improving range of motion because they involve intentional movement that simulates the action that will be done during physical activity.
  • Injury prevention: Warming up correctly reduces the risk of injury by increasing blood flow to the muscles and preparing the body for more intense physical activity. This can help protect muscles, joints and tendons from strain or damage.
  • Enhance performance: A proper warm-up routine before exercise helps prepare the body for more robust, strenuous activity, increasing muscle power and speed, and improving coordination and reaction times.
  • Improved body awareness: When done correctly, a warm-up can improve body awareness by creating an opportunity to practice movements and become more aware of the body’s position and alignment.
  • Improved circulation: Warming up increases heart rate and blood flow, helping to move oxygen and nutrients to the muscles, reducing the overall stress on the body and improving physical performance.
  • Decreased muscle soreness: Warming up before exercise can reduce the risk of muscle soreness after exercise because it helps to loosen muscles, minimizing the strain placed on them during exercise.

Tips for an Effective Warm-Up

An effective warm-up consists of three main components: dynamic stretching, cardiovascular exercise (cardio) and muscle activation. As opposed to static stretching in which the same position is held for 30 to 90 seconds before moving to the next stretch, dynamic stretching involves actively moving joints and muscles with specific motions for 10 to 12 repetitions, targeting certain muscle groups. The specific motions depend on the sport or physical activity for which the person is warming up. Examples of dynamic stretches include walking lunges, squats and arm circles.

Cardiovascular exercise, commonly referred to as aerobic exercise or cardio, is any activity that increases your heart rate and breathing, sweating and overall blood flow. The goal of a cardiovascular warm-up is to ease the body into activity without overexertion. Cardiovascular exercise can include jogging, skipping or cycling.

Muscle activation exercises are short, isolation exercises that target specific muscles to prepare them for physical activity. Similar to dynamic stretching and cardiovascular exercises, muscle activation exercises increase blood flow to the muscles to enhance workouts and prevent injury.
