Discovering Rare Nasal Cancer
After visiting the emergency room repeatedly for nearly six months and being diagnosed with a severe ear infection, Alisha Price sought out a second opinion from Andrew M. Nida, MD, at Hattiesburg Clinic Ear, Nose & Throat.
During his exam, Dr. Nida discovered a rare nasopharyngeal cancer in the back of Price’s nose.
“If you take 100,000 people, maybe one or two of them will get this type of cancer in a year,” Nida said.
Prior to her diagnosis, Price experienced ringing in her ears and was coughing up blood. Nida said that these are just a couple of the symptoms to look out for.
“Trouble breathing through your nose, bloody drainage, discomfort that lasts,” Nida said. “Not something that’s temporary, but ‘Hey this keeps coming up.’”
Price was diagnosed in March of 2023 and by October, after seven weeks of daily radiation followed by weekly chemotherapy, treatment was complete. Today, Price has been cancer free for a little over two years.
Price said that while treatment was a hard road, it was bearable thanks to Dr. Nida.
“His job at one point was his dream,” Price said. “His dream saved me.”
