Henderson Discusses Presumptive Care
Anita S. Henderson, MD, a physician with Hattiesburg Clinic The Pediatric Clinic, recently spoke to WDAM about a new Mississippi law that allows eligible low-income pregnant women to receive earlier prenatal care through presumptive Medicaid coverage.
This initiative lets women begin prenatal care right away if they meet income requirements, even before their official Medicaid application is processed.
In the interview, Dr. Henderson explained how early access to care, particularly during the first trimester, can help identify potential health concerns. She noted, “The first trimester visit, which means the first 12 weeks, is when we do an ultrasound, lab work and check the mothers for high blood pressure, diabetes and anemia.”
She also emphasized that many women skip early care because of the cost, and this new policy could help reduce that barrier.
This update marks an important step toward better maternal and infant health in Mississippi – something Henderson and providers across the state have long advocated for. By removing delays in care, the legislation has the potential to improve health outcomes for both mothers and their babies.
