Pediatric Colonoscopy

Our gastroenterologists are specially trained in treating all gastrointestinal conditions in children and are skilled in performing procedures on infants, young children and adolescents, including colonoscopies.

Colonoscopy Overview

A colonoscopy is a test where a doctor looks directly inside the colon (also called the large intestine) with a camera to identify why a child may be experiencing stomach pain, bleeding, diarrhea and other issues such as Crohn’s disease. This safe procedure helps your child’s doctors better understand and treat your child’s problem.

The pediatric gastroenterology providers at Hattiesburg Clinic are dedicated to providing professional, family-centered care to each child who comes through our door. Our gastroenterologists are specially trained in treating all gastrointestinal conditions in children and are skilled in performing procedures on infants, young children and adolescents, including colonoscopies.

Why might my child need a colonoscopy?

For adults, the most common reason for a colonoscopy is to detect colon cancer. This is not the primary purpose of a colonoscopy for children. Your child’s doctor may recommend a colonoscopy to look for the cause of conditions such as blood in their stool, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain and other issues.

Will my child be asleep during the procedure?

Your child will be sedated during the procedure and will be managed by our pediatric anesthesiologists and monitored by our expert staff the entire time to be sure that he or she is safe and not experiencing any pain. Our team of board-certified gastroenterologists are specially trained in pediatric colonoscopy procedures and will treat your child as one of our own.

Preparing for Your Child’s Colonoscopy

Your child’s doctor will meet with you one-on-one to go over all the preparation steps prior to the procedure so that you have all the instructions you need. The prep for a colonoscopy takes place the day before the procedure, including following a liquid diet starting in the morning and continuing until the procedure is over. Your child will need to have all stool cleared out before the test. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the prep, please call our office to speak with our specialists.
