ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) Overview

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults. Signs and symptoms are usually present in childhood, but for many individuals the diagnosis does not occur until later in life. ADHD is often displayed by a continuing pattern of inattention, with or without hyperactive or impulse behavior. These characteristics can interfere with how individuals manage their own emotions and actions and can disrupt daily functions and their quality of life.

Signs and Symptoms of ADHD

Signs and symptoms of ADHD vary among individuals and change as one grows older. A diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is made when symptoms are persistent and severe enough to interfere with daily functioning.

Common Signs of ADHD in Children

  • Difficulty focusing and paying attention
  • Easily distracted and has trouble following directions
  • Difficulty performing tasks that require prolonged focus
  • Poor organizational skills and often procrastinates on tasks
  • Forgetful, often loses things and makes careless mistakes
  • Restless and has difficulty sitting still
  • Excessive talking
  • Impulsive behavior and takes frequent risks without thinking
  • Lacks patience

Common Signs of ADHD in Adults

  • Impulsive behavior and frequent mood swings
  • Difficulty focusing on or completing a task or multitasking
  • Disorganized and misplaces items
  • Poor time management skills
  • Lack of attention and memory issues
  • Inability to prioritize
  • Relationship troubles at home and at work
  • Nervous energy and restlessness.
  • Difficulty managing stress

The presence of these symptoms does not mean an individual has ADHD. If you have concerns that you or a loved one exhibits signs of ADHD, it is important that these symptoms are evaluated by a qualified behavioral or mental health professional. Hattiesburg Clinic’s team physicians and providers offer a thorough assessment, diagnosis and recommended treatment plan.

Types of ADHD

ADHD is commonly presented in three different ways. Providers use the signs of ADHD to appropriately diagnose and determine the type of condition.

Predominantly Inattentive ADHD: Individuals have difficulty paying attention, completing tasks, following directions, organizing and staying on task. They are often easily distracted, forgetful and have trouble with tasks that require focus. In the past, this type has commonly been referred to as ADD, attention-deficit disorder.

Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive ADHD: Individuals present concerns with hyperactivity and impulsivity without significant inattention. They may have excess energy and have trouble sitting still. Hyperactive individuals may fidget and cause disruptions to others. Individuals with impulsive behavior act on impulses without thinking beforehand. They are unable to wait their turn and often feel restless.

Combined ADHD: Individuals with combined ADHD demonstrate signs of all three characteristics: Inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

Causes of ADHD

Currently, the exact cause or risk factors of ADHD are not fully understood. Research has shown a link between a combination of genetic and neurological factors. Research has also shown several areas of the brain are different or function differently in individuals with ADHD. It is important to know that ADHD is a real, lifelong medical condition that should be diagnosed and treated by healthcare professionals.

How is ADHD diagnosed?

An accurate diagnosis is essential for determining the most appropriate treatment for an individual’s specific needs. ADHD is more commonly diagnosed in children ages 4 to 17 as children younger than 4 years-old are naturally overactive or inattentive and their characteristics are changing often. Diagnosing ADHD in older teenagers and adults can be difficult as certain ADHD symptoms are similar to those caused by other conditions, such as anxiety, depression or other mood disorders. Many adults recognize that everyday tasks can be difficult but are not aware they have ADHD.

Treatment Options for ADHD

Recommended treatment for ADHD is tailored to an individual’s diagnosis and unique needs and may involve a combination of approaches. It is important for individuals with ADHD to work with health care professionals to determine a comprehensive treatment plan that focuses on their specific challenges and goals.

Education & Skill-building involves teaching individuals with ADHD new skills such as organizational and time management, as well as strategies to help manage impulsive behaviors and improve inattention. Specialized education plans including an IEP or 504 plan can be implemented in schools to provide accommodations to support students with ADHD. Local school districts determine eligibility for these programs.

Medications are commonly prescribed to manage ADHD symptoms. There are two categories of medications used to treat ADHD including, stimulants and non-stimulants. The recommended medication depends on an individual’s specific needs. Hattiesburg Clinic can prescribe and manage medication for individuals with ADHD.

Parent and Family Education about ADHD can help family members better understand and support their loved one. It can also enable them to develop a structured and accommodating environment at home, in the classroom or other commonly visited locations.

Diet and Lifestyle Changes can help manage symptoms of ADHD. Some individuals have found that a healthy diet combined with regular exercise, sufficient sleep and managed stress are beneficial in improving symptoms.
