What Is a Memory Screening?
A memory screening is a brief series of questions and/or tasks that typically takes about 20 minutes to complete. The screening can help determine whether an individual may benefit from a more comprehensive medical evaluation. It is not intended to diagnose any illness or replace consultation with a health care provider.
After the screening, individuals will review the results with the screening administer and discuss whether a follow-up with a physician or other clinician is appropriate. All screening results are confidential. Participants receive a copy of their results to share with a health care professional for follow-up and/or inclusion in their medical records.
Why Are Memory Screenings Important?
Memory screenings play a key role in identifying early signs of cognitive decline, including those associated with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Early detection allows for timely intervention, which can help preserve quality of life and provide individuals and families with valuable time to plan for the future. Regular screenings also offer reassurance and encourage a proactive approach to long-term brain health.
Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) Signs
Mild Cognitive Impairment often presents with subtle changes that may be easy to overlook. Common signs include frequent memory lapses, such as forgetting recent conversations, appointments or where items were placed. Individuals may also experience difficulty with problem-solving or decision-making, including challenges following familiar instructions or managing finances.
Other signs may include trouble finding words or recalling names during conversations, reduced attention or focus, and noticeable changes in mood such as increased anxiety, irritability or depression. If these symptoms persist or worsen over time, early screening and medical evaluation are important next steps.
