Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EOE)

Our gastroenterology team is skilled in Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EOE) diagnosis and treatment.

Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EOE) Overview

Hattiesburg Clinic offers Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EOE) treatment to patients across Mississippi. EOE is a chronic immune system disease that results in inflammation of the esophagus. EOE causes a reaction in the esophagus that leads to issues with how it contracts.

We know how important a proper diagnosis and treatment plan is when you are struggling with EOE. If you are experiencing symptoms related to EOE disease, we can help. Our gastroenterology team offers the quality care and expertise you need.

An evaluation and/or endoscopy may be required to provide a proper diagnosis. Upon diagnosis, your medical provider will work with you to determine an appropriate treatment plan. Treatment options may include dietary changes or medications.

Signs and Symptoms of EOE

It is important to note that symptoms vary based on factors like age and severity of the condition. Some of the most common symptoms we see are:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Heartburn
  • Regurgitation
  • Stomach Pain
  • Vomiting
  • Food being stuck in the esophagus
  • Feeding problems and weight gain issues in children

Understanding the Causes of EOE

While the exact cause hasn’t been determined, it is believed to be caused by both genetic and environmental factors. We know that this immune system response is typically triggered by an allergen, such as a seasonal allergy or food allergy. This reaction leads to an elevation in white blood cells, called eosinophils, that collect in your esophagus, causing inflammation. Allergic sensitivities that may contribute or be associated with EOE include:

  • Seasonal allergies
  • Food allergies
  • Asthma
  • Eczema
  • Environmental triggers
