You In Mind Blog: The Impact of the Pandemic on Our Children

The Impact of the Pandemic on Our Children

By: Melissa M. Smith, FNP

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted our world, and no one has been excluded from its repercussions.  I want to take a minute to focus on the impact of the pandemic on our children and adolescents and share observations from interactions that I have had with students.

In a matter of a few hours last year, school lockdowns and business closures became reality.  Parents suddenly were without jobs, and financial security was destroyed for many families.  Children were affected socially, emotionally and academically.

Socially, the restrictions have limited peer relationship development and maintenance.

Emotionally, there has been a noticeable increase in anxiety, sadness, fear, frustration and overall unrest.

Academically, there have been unprecedented changes that include decreased instruction time and adjustments to distance and virtual learning, as well as the physical aspects of having to wear masks at all times.

I have been amazed at the resilience of young people whom I have encountered, and I have strived daily to encourage each one.

Thank you to each child, parent, caretaker and teacher who has exhibited positive attitudes and actions during this difficult time.  My hope is for continued success as we adapt to and overcome these challenging obstacles.

Hoping for a much better 2021!
