Tia Magee: A Quote a Day Keeps the Negativity Away

Hattiesburg Clinic Employee Spotlight

“You’ve never lived this day before and you never will again. Make the most of it.”

That’s one of the daily inspirational quotes Tia Magee has written on the white board in her office at Hattiesburg Clinic Eye Physicians & Surgeons. It’s something she’s become known for her in her department. Every day she writes some new message of positivity; and if she forgets to update it with a new quote, even the custodian will call her on it.

“I’m a positive person. I try to bring out the positivity in everyone,” says the Ocean Springs native.

Magee began working at Hattiesburg Clinic in May 2017 as a patient accounts representative at Pain Management Health Center. Before the clinic, she was an ophthalmic tech at Southern Eye Center, working alongside a glaucoma specialist.

While she enjoyed learning the business side of the clinic in her role as a PAR, Magee says she missed interacting with patients in an exam room setting. She transferred to Eye Physicians & Surgeons, where she now performs special testing as an ophthalmic tech.

In this role, she tests patients for various eye conditions, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. Magee, who describes herself as “a people person,” says she enjoys her work because it gives her a chance to provide encouragement to patients following a diagnosis.

“I get to explain to patients it’s not life or death. It’s something to control.”

She also says she enjoys the unique dynamic of her department, which is all women.

“We’re kind of like a family. We have a potluck at Thanksgiving, Christmas, when there’s a death in the family…We like each other. We understand each other.”

After a year and a half at Hattiesburg Clinic, there are three words she’d use to describe it: convenient [for patients], unified and caring.

Magee says she one day hopes to become the manager of a health care facility, where she can use both her business sense and her clinical experience.

In the meantime, she’ll continue being the positive people person her colleagues know her as and the tough middle child of her family who occasionally enjoys the guilty indulgence of Bluebell Cookies ‘n Cream ice cream.
