Pediatric Clinic Offers Breastfeeding Counseling with Certified Lactation Counselor

The Pediatric Clinic, a service of Hattiesburg Clinic, offers clinical breastfeeding counseling for moms with the guidance of a certified lactation counselor.

Heather Starns, a licensed practical nurse at The Pediatric Clinic, was recently credentialed as a certified lactation counselor (CLC). This certification identifies a professional in lactation counseling who has demonstrated the necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes to provide clinical breastfeeding counseling to families who are thinking about breastfeeding or who have questions or problems during the course of breastfeeding or lactation.

Starns attended a five-day course in Knoxville, Tenn., where she received training and competency verification in breastfeeding and human lactation support, interventions for breastfeeding mothers, and a biological understanding of milk production. At the end of her training, Starns passed her CLC exam offered by The Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice.

With this certification, Starns is able to provide additional support for mothers who wish to breastfeed their babies. Mothers who are interested can schedule a lactation counseling session at the same time as a routine checkup.

“It’s a benefit for new moms because typically they need the most help within the first two weeks of [the infant’s] life, so if we’re offering that in the clinic during their two-week checkup. I can help them here at the office to avoid a trip to the hospital,” said Starns.

She said she pursued the certification because she found it was a much-needed service for moms who come there.

“It’s always better to reach out if they’re struggling or having concerns. What I find a lot of the time is that people just need a little reassurance.”

Patients must be established with The Pediatric Clinic to receive lactation counseling. To schedule an appointment, call 601-579-3000.
