A ‘regular shot’ and a ‘scientific marvel’: An 8-year-old and a pediatrician talk vaccine

It has been nearly three weeks since the approval and authorization of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for kids ages 5-11.

Jonathan W. Shook, MD, a physician at Hattiesburg Clinic The Pediatric Clinic and Connections, said several of his adolescent patients have already lined up to receive the jab as they hope it will allow them to return to their pre-pandemic routines and some form of normalcy.

“We know that it works, and we can give it with confidence,” Shook said. “I think it’s just a modern scientific marvel that we have this vaccine to help protect us and get us out of this pandemic.”

Shook said that “the vaccines still appear to be the wisest and safest choice [to protect children].” All four of his children have received the vaccine.

To schedule a vaccine appointment, contact your pediatrician’s office. The Pediatric Clinic patients may schedule an appointment by calling (601) 579-3000; Children’s Clinic patients may schedule their appointment by calling (601) 261-3500.

For patients who have not established care with a Hattiesburg Clinic pediatrician, vaccine appointments are also available at HealthWorks Immunization Clinic and can be scheduled via Iris or by calling (601) 261-1620.
