Functional & Integrative Medicine

Hattiesburg Clinic Functional & Integrative Medicine offers a unique approach to patient care by addressing the root cause of illness and allowing the patient to have a proactive role in his/her health. This form of care incorporates nutritional counseling, lifestyle modification and personalized supplementation based on the patient’s needs.
Our medical team has an appreciation for the body’s natural capacity for healing and possesses extensive training and certification in integrative and functional medicine. Our ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for our patients.

Functional and integrative medicine is a relatively new branch of medicine that views the body as one integrated system. It attempts to identify and treat the underlying cause of disease rather than focus primarily on the management of disease symptoms.

It offers a very personalized approach to patient care in which the patient’s history is considered – from birth to the present – in an effort to examine all of the contributing factors that could have played a role in getting the patient to his/her current state of health.

Functional and integrative medicine utilizes a wide array of conventional lab testing (as needed), as well as specialized functional testing, including but not limited to: advanced nutritional profiles, hormonal testing, gut microbiome testing, genetic testing and metabolic pathway testing.

We offer services for those wanting to optimize their health, as well as treatment for a wide variety of chronic issues.

At Functional & Integrative Medicine, the patient becomes a partner. As a patient, you work with your physician, allowing you to be in charge of improving your own health and changing the outcome of disease.

Long-distance Consultations:

We are pleased to offer phone consultations and/or telemedicine visits for patients that cannot make it in to the office. This is available to patients in the state of Mississippi. We require that initial consultations be in person.

How is Functional & Integrative Medicine different?

This approach to care involves understanding the origins, prevention and treatment of complex chronic conditions. The Institute for Functional Medicine describes the following as hallmarks of the specialty:

  • Patient-centered care. The focus is on patient-centered care, promoting health as a positive vitality, beyond just the absence of disease.
  • An integrative, science-based health care approach. Functional and integrative medicine practitioners look at the “big picture” to consider the complex web of interactions in the patient’s history, physiology and lifestyle that can lead to illness. This includes consideration of the patient’s genetic makeup, as well as internal (mind, body and spirit) and external (physical and social environment) factors that affect total functioning.
  • Integrating best medical practices. In this specialty, traditional Western medical practices are combined with what are sometimes considered “alternative” or “integrative” medicine, creating a focus on prevention through nutrition, diet and exercise; use of modern lab testing and other diagnostic techniques; and prescribed combinations of drugs and/or botanical medicines, supplements, therapeutic diets, detoxification programs or stress-management techniques.
