HealthWorks Immunization Clinic, Children’s Clinic and The Pediatric Clinic offering Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine booster for adolescents ages 12-17

On Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) endorsed the Advisory Committee on Immunization practices’ (AICP) recommendation to expand eligibility of booster doses to those 12 to 15 years old. The CDC now recommends that adolescents aged 12 to 17 years old should receive a booster shot five months after their initial Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination series.

“It is critical that we protect our children and teens from COVID-19 infection and the complications of severe disease,” CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said. “This booster dose will provide optimized protection against COVID-19 and the Omicron variant. I encourage all parents to keep their children up to date with CDC’s COVID-19 vaccine recommendations.”

The agency also endorses a third dose for immunocompromised children ages 5-11 at least 28 days after their two-dose primary series. At this time, only the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine and vaccine booster are authorized and recommended for children and adolescents ages 5-17.

“We are going to be seeing COVID for quite some time now, and vaccinations are going to be our best method to prevent it and to keep kids in school,” said Anita Henderson, MD, pediatrician at Hattiesburg Clinic and president of the Mississippi Chapter of American Academy of Pediatrics. “We know that the vaccines are safe and effective at preventing severe disease, and recent data shows that the boosters help strengthen protection against Omicron. That’s why we’re encouraging parents to get their kids vaccinated, get them boosted so children can safely stay in school.”

To schedule a vaccine appointment, contact your pediatrician’s office. The Pediatric Clinic patients may schedule an appointment by calling (601) 579-3000; The Children’s Clinic patients may schedule their appointment by calling (601) 261-3500.

For patients who have not established care with a Hattiesburg Clinic pediatrician, vaccine appointments are also available at HealthWorks Immunization Clinic and can be scheduled via Iris or by calling (601) 261-1620.

All children under the age of 18 will require a parent or guardian permission to receive the vaccine.
