Christopher L. Cooley, MD, a physician at Hattiesburg Clinic Eye Associates, recently received the Patriot Award in recognition of his support of Curtis J. Shaffer, OD, serving in the Air National Guard.
Dr. Shaffer, who is also a physician at Eye Associates and a Lt. Colonel in the Guard, nominated Dr. Cooley for the award.
“Dr. Cooley has been very supportive of my military duties,” said Shaffer. “He has encouraged me and thanked me for serving by treating my patients in my absence, including covering clinic calls when I have an assignment that comes up on short notice.”
The Patriot Award is presented by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense office that promotes supportive work environments for service members. The Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support citizen warriors through a wide-range of measures, including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families and granting leaves of absence if needed.
“Dr. Shaffer volunteers his time to serve his country. He has made sacrifices as he does his part to help protect our country. I believe that supporting our military is important, personally and professionally. It’s humbling to be receiving the Patriot Award,” said Cooley.
