Hattiesburg Clinic on the Forefront for COVID-19 Vaccine Trials, Treatment
An Update from Hattiesburg Clinic Chief Executive Officer, Bryan N. Batson, MD
This past week, the nation received encouraging news from two pharmaceutical companies regarding the success of their COVID-19 vaccine trials. Both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine trials have shown to be over 90% effective in their respective studies to prevent COVID-19.
Hattiesburg Clinic continues to be on the forefront of this type of information. Hattiesburg Clinic Medisync Clinical Research has served as a clinical research site for Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine trial. What this means is Hattiesburg Clinic’s patients – our friends, neighbors and relatives – have directly benefited from Moderna’s Cove Study. Before these vaccines can be cleared from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there are still a few steps that must be completed. Early estimates indicate these vaccines could be available for the public in the summer of 2021.
We are also encouraged by recent information showing treatment options for patients with COVID-19. An antibody treatment was approved by the FDA in the last two weeks. Due to the partnership of Hattiesburg Clinic and Forrest Health through the Cough & Fever Clinic, we recently received our first shipment to make available to certain COVID-positive patients who have other medical conditions causing them to become very sick. The goal of the antibody treatment is to keep people out of the hospital, and unfortunately, our local hospitals are at maximum capacity again, creating a strain on resources and quality of care.
