At Hattiesburg Clinic Plastic Surgery, our physicians offer a variety of facial surgical procedures, including eyelid surgery. Cosmetic eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both, restoring firmness to the area surrounding the eyes and making you look more rested and alert. Eyelid surgery can treat loose or sagging skin that creates bags and folds in the lower lids or hides the natural contour of the upper lids.
At our Hattiesburg office, we strive to help each blepharoplasty patient reach his or her cosmetic and aesthetic goals. Our board-certified plastic surgeons have extensive experience in performing eyelid surgery on men and women.
Blepharoplasty can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids. In upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made in the natural crease of the eyelid. Excess skin and fat are then removed before the incision is closed with fine sutures. Lower eyelid surgery involves an incision at either the lash line or inside the eyelids. Excess fat is then removed, reducing under-eye puffiness. Our eyelid surgery is typically performed under local or general anesthesia.
At Hattiesburg Clinic Plastic Surgery, blepharoplasty is common among both men and women. While most of our patients are over the age of 50, younger individuals may undergo the procedure if they wish to correct their droopy eyelids or under-eye puffiness.
If a patient has one of the following conditions, he or she may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery:
After this procedure, patients are advised to keep the head elevated and to use cold compresses to reduce swelling and bruising around the eyes. Patients may also feel “teary,” experience blurred vision or become sensitive to light – but this should subside after a couple of weeks. Our plastic surgeons will also advise patients on how to properly clean the eyes. Additionally, patients will be given eye drops that will reduce any dryness, itching or burning.
Patients will want to avoid wearing contact lenses or makeup for at least two weeks, and will be advised not to drive until vision has returned to normal. It’s also important to stay out of the sun while recovering. Most of our eyelid surgery patients are able to resume normal physical activity three to four weeks after their procedure.
Blepharoplasty patients often report a boost in self-confidence following the surgery, as tired and wrinkled eyelids are replaced with a more youthful and refreshed look.
Because this is a highly individualized procedure, the cost for eyelid surgery varies. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff is on hand to provide you with any information you need about blepharoplasty, including pricing information. To schedule a consultation, please call 601-261-3690.
