What is a Vascular Specialist?
A vascular specialist is typically a physician who has completed a five-year training program in general surgery as well as a two-year training program in vascular surgery.

What does a Vascular Specialist do?
A vascular specialist is trained to provide comprehensive care of arterial and venous disease. This includes medical management, diagnostic studies, endovascular surgery (angioplasty and stents), and traditional open surgery.

What kind of problems do Vascular Specialists treat?

Carotid Stenosis
Blockages in the carotid arteries may put you at an increased risk for stroke. If found early, your risk of stroke can be reduced by open surgery or placement of a carotid stent.
Peripheral Arterial Disease
Blockages in the arteries in the legs can lead to cramping while walking, and if left untreated can ultimately lead to limb loss. Arterial disease can also occur in the arteries of the upper extremities, as well as the arteries in the abdomen. PAD is typically treated with medical management including tight control of diabetes, cholesterol, and exercise. When needed, vascular specialists can treat PAD with angioplasty and stenting as well as open surgery.
Vascular Trauma
Sometimes bad things happen to good people. When that happens vascular specialists repair traumatic injuries to blood vessels all over the body.
Aortic Aneurysms
An aneurysm is a dilation of a blood vessel to one and a half times its normal size. Aneurysms can be a source of emboli (debris that goes downstream with the blood flow) that cause poor blood flow in the extremities. They can also rupture. A ruptured aneurysm is a life-threatening situation. Vascular specialists can repair aneurysms with a large stent or with traditional surgery.
Venous Disease
Dysfunctional veins can cause swelling of the legs and varicose veins. Vascular specialists can treat varicose veins with sclerotherapy (injections), open surgery, or with an ablation procedure done in the office.
Visceral Arterial Disease
Blockages in the arteries going to the gut or kidneys can cause a life threatening situation. Vascular specialists can treat these blockages with angioplasty and stents or traditional open surgery.
Deep Vein Thrombosis
Vascular specialists may choose to treat some patients with DVT with catheter directed thrombolysis (clot busting drugs). People at risk for pulmonary embolism may also be treated with an IVC filter.
