Hattiesburg Clinic Connections provides comprehensive speech and language pathology services, including assessments and individualized treatments for: Reading Language Speech Children start to learn as soon as they are born. As they grow and develop, their speech and language skills become increasingly more complex. During speech and language development, children learn skills that are important to the development of literacy or reading and writing. This stage, known as emergent literacy, begins at birth and continues through preschool. The experiences with talking and listening gained during the preschool period prepare children to read and write during the early elementary school years. Martha P. Woodall, M.S., CCC-SP
