Are Your Migraines Getting in the Way of Life?
Migraines are not just headaches. They are throbbing, debilitating headaches that create life interruptions. Often accompanied by nausea or sensitivity to light and sound, migraine headaches make it difficult to enjoy life. Today, 38 million Americans suffer from migraines, according to the Migraine Research Foundation.
Hattiesburg Clinic Neurology offers BOTOX® for migraines, the first and only FDA-approved preventative treatment to reduce headache days in adults with chronic migraines. Our board-certified neurologists Wendell R. Helveston, MD; C. Scott Lynn, MD; and Jose P. Fernandez, Jr., MD, specialize in BOTOX® treatment for chronic migraines.
About the Treatment
BOTOX® (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a chronic migraine treatment that is injected to prevent headaches in patients 18 years or older who have chronic headache 15 or more days each month with headaches lasting four or more hours.
Many treatment options are used to decrease pain during the onset of a chronic headache. As a preventive treatment, BOTOX® is used to stop migraines before they start.
What to Expect
BOTOX® is a neurotoxic protein that relaxes the muscles when injected. It is most commonly known for the ability to reduce facial wrinkles. To treat chronic migraine, BOTOX® is injected into muscles of the forehead, side and back of the head and neck. The injections block the pain signals and minimize the onset of chronic migraine by causing the muscles to relax.
BOTOX® treatments are usually given once every three months. Each treatment is a series of multiple injections. Many patients begin to see results within a few days of treatment. With each use, BOTOX® continues to reduce the number of headache days each month.
